Andy Gibson |
|
The Andy Gibson was a 140-foot long by 32-foot wide stern wheeler that was used on the upper Mississippi River in the late 1800’s. It was used to haul passengers and cargo between Aitkin and Grand Rapids. At maximum capacity, she could carry 100 tons of freight and 150 passengers.
Late in her career, the Gibson was used by the Army Corps of Engineers as a dredge vessel.
Purchased by the Potter Company in 1891, the Andy Gibson was retired in 1892, dismantled and sunk at Potter’s Landing adjacent to the pier there.
At periods of low water, the Gibson is visible on the southern shore west of Aitkin. |
